98000 Reasons: The Fight Against Tort Reform

The American Association for Justice ("AAJ") has launched a new website, http://www.98000reasons.org, in an effort to fight tort reform and raise patient safety awareness by pointing out the significant impact medical errors have on patients' lives. The website urges visitors to use the site to tell Congress to "put patients first."

The website reports that preventable medical errors claim 98,000 lives every year and is the number 6 leading cause of death.

They point out that in order to prevent medical malpractice litigation we have to prevent medical errors. The website features videos of injured patients and individuals who have lost loved ones due to medical negligence.

The website gives visitors the opportunity to sign an electronic petition and sends it directly to the Senate. The petition urges the Senate not to use "medical tribunals" or special medical malpractice courts as that would prevent litigants from exercising their 7th Amendment right to a jury trial and argues that attempting to limit "an injured patient's right to their day in court should be voted down," and we should focus on patient safety.
