Approaching Emergency Vehicles: Safe Driving Tips

We all know that feeling... our heart races, we get butterflies in our stomachs, and we think please don't let me get a ticket. So you pull to the right and you feel relief as the emergency vehicle drives right past you. A story from this weekend has prompted me to encourage everyone to practice safe driving habits when emergency vehicles approach you on the road.

Early Sunday morning in downtown Kansas City, a car collided into the side of a fire truck. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported. The fire truck did not have its lights and sirens on because it was heading back to the local Fire Station; however, it still reminded me of the importance of practicing emergency vehicle safety.

  • If your radio is on and the windows are closed it can be difficult to hear approaching sirens so be sure to check your mirrors for emergency vehicle lights.

  • Once you hear or see an approaching emergency vehicle, yield the right of way by immediately getting over to the right if you can safely do so.

  • If you are in an intersection, continue forward to leave the intersection and then pull to the right.
