As summer months approach, it is imperative that parents remember the importance of helmets in protecting children from serious accidents.
In Michigan last week, two young boys were riding on an all terrain vehicle (ATV) when they tried to cross a road. At the very same time, a Ford Mustang was crossing. The car was unable to stop when it collided with the ATV, injuring the thirteen-year-old driver, and killing the eight-year-old passenger. It is reported that the older boy was wearing a safety helmet, but the younger boy was not wearing one upon impact. As a result, the younger boy was knocked unconscious. It is believed that the child suffered from serious brain injuries, and shortly after, his family made the decision to take him off of life support.
The driver of the car was left unharmed.
The difference a little protection can make is astounding. Clearly, if the younger boy had been wearing a safety helmet, he may have been able to walk away, like the other boy did.
In many rural parts of Missouri and Kansas, it is no secret that young children are given permission to take ATVs for a ride, often because guardians deem these smaller vehicles easier to drive than a regular car. But whether you let your child drive an ATV, or just be a passenger, we urge you to talk to your child about this incident, and make them wear a safety helmet at all times.
