The Consumer Product Safety Commission (
CPSC) now estimates that as many as 13 infant deaths may have occurred after using the very popular baby slings that have been a hot item on the market over the past several years. What's more, at least 24 injuries have occurred to infants that may be linked to this sling, several of which involved skull fractures.
The potential danger may lie in the construction of this sling. First, it is believed that the close confinement of the fabric that cradles the baby may lead to a lack of oxygen, and may slowly and without notice from the oxygen deprived child, cause asphyxiation to the infant. The other hazardous and unforeseen danger may occur when infants in the sling slowly slip down inside the sling, leaving them in a tight, oxygen-restrictive fetal position. Once again, with a lack of oxygen the child is left in a life-threatening situation, but because the deprivation of oxygen is so slow, the asphyxiation or
suffocation of the child may go unnoticed by both the parent and the debilitated child.
Even if a parent were to notice in time, the injurious effects on the child may go unseen for quite some time. Lack of oxygen to the young, constantly developing brain of infants can have long-term effects.
