Big Step Against Tort Reform?
On Thursday, The Illinois Supreme Court found that placing a cap on non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases is unconstitutional. The same issue is currently in front of the Missouri Supreme Court giving it the opportunity to put patients first.
Tort reform has a devastating impact on medical malpractice victims because placing caps on damages automatically reduces recoveries without considering each claim on a case by case basis even if a jury feels the victim deserves more. Tort reform protects hospitals and doctors but not the patients who have suffered a significant and debilitating injuries at the hands of those hospitals and doctors.
Tort reform was aimed at reducing the cost of health care but over the years that goal has not been reached. It is time to end tort reform so as the tort reform battle wages on, visit www.98000reasons.org and sign the petition - fight tort reform.
