High levels of cadmium were recently found in some
children's jewelry manufactured in China and sold to United States retailers. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal and known carcinogen. Research shows it is linked to developmental problems in children including learning disabilities.
With the banning of lead based toys were banned in 2008, toy manufacturers have started using cadmium instead. According to Associated Press reports, cadmium can be more dangerous than lead causing cancer, kidney problems, and brittle bones with direct exposure. Exposure can occur if children suck, bite, or swallow the jewelry.
Bruce A. Fowler with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention equates the toxic metal to poison.
How can you protect your child from cadmium poisoning? Parents are urged not to buy cheap metal jewelry and to safely discard any dangerous jewelry you already have. Wal-Mart and Claire's have already taken down the dangerous jewelry from their shelves.
