Can
music therapy help relieve pain? According to recent studies conducted at Metro Health Medical Center' burn unit, that answer may be yes. In a study conducted from 2001 through 2010, burn patients were monitored as they had their dressings changed, a painful process that even strong drugs cannot control. Patients that were provided music therapy before and during their dressing changes showed decrease pain levels. Besides asking for patient input on their personal pain rating, measurements were taken of the patient's heart rate, respiration and stress hormone levels. Doctors found that music was helping to reduce patient pain.
So what does this mean? Well, doctors feel that these theapies need to be studied more, but that music therapy could have a significant impact in all areas of medicine. It appears that along with the medical components such as reduced heart rate, relaxation, strengthened lung power, etc., music can simply lift a patient's spirits and distract them from their illness and pain. All of which can help the healing process.
Another benefit of music therapy is it appears to help rewire the brain, creating new pathways - past parts that may be damaged - to help a patient heal. Think of the benefits to stroke victims or to patients with brain injuries.
