Crossing a Kansas City Highway is Never a Good Idea-- Avoid Pedestrian Accidents in Kansas and Missouri

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we are always looking for ways to protect pedestrians in Kansas and Missouri. Pedestrian Injury Accidents are easily preventable but twice this month we have lost Kansas Citians on metro highways.
  • A Kansas City woman was killed in a pedestrian-auto accident when she tried to cross Interstate 70 near Lee's Summit Road in Independence, Missouri over the weekend. Police reports indicate the woman was wearing dark clothing when she was hit by a car. The motorist stopped and cooperated with police.

  • A 23 year-old man from Ottawa, Kansas was killed as he walked along I-35 on Sunday morning. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the fatal pedestrian accident happened around 87th street and Interstate 35 around 4 a.m. The victim has been identified as Kevin E. Polidore. Reports indicate he was struck by a Kia Optima. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the pedestrian accident.
Missouri law states that “…every driver of a vehicle shall exercise the highest degree of care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary and shall exercise proper precaution upon observing any child or any confused or incapacitated person upon a roadway.”

This means that while a pedestrian is expected to follow safety practices such as using the sidewalk, looking out for traffic, and crossing at crosswalks or intersections, drivers also have a responsibility to watch out for pedestrians – particularly children and elderly or disabled adults.
As experienced Kansas City Pedestrian Injury Lawyers, we are deeply saddened by the tragic death in this unfortunate accident.  We hope in the future, everyone in Kansas and Missouri takes time to remember the absolute danger you are facing when you try and cross a highway on foot.  Those vehicles are moving way too fast to predict the time you need to cross.  Always assume it's never enough and find a safe way to cross.
