Think you are safest when driving by yourself in Kansas City? Not necessarily, according to the Kansas City Police Department. The department just released statistics regarding deadly accidents in our area and found not only a slight increase in fatal accidents, but also noted an upward trend of
single car accidents resulting in a fatality. In 2010 there were 68 fatal accidents in Kansas City, with 29 of those being single car crashes where the driver lost control of his vehicle in an accident. Of the 29 single car crashes, 17 of those were attributed to the driver being impaired.
So what is going on with the other 12 fatalities? Well, according to Police Chief James Corwin, the trend is concerning. The 12 other accident causes were listed as "distracted", so there is really no way to tell what really happened. Also, since there were no other people or vehicles involved, police were often left guessing as to what might have happened.
One of the main concerns for police is the issue of
distracted driving. Phone calls, texing, and even GPS devices are all common causes of accidents.
