A study came out this week that shows that the obesity drug Meridia is likely to cause heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular problems in people with certain health problems. The purpose of the study was to see if a weight loss drug would reduce health problems such as heart disease. Instead, it brought up questions about the
safety of Meridia and other weight loss drugs.
The European Medicines Agency advised that pharmacies and doctors in Europe stop dispensing the drug immediately. In the U.S., a stronger warning will be put on the label.
The new warning will say that the drug should not be used by patients who have a history of heart attacks or strokes, or who have uncontrolled high blood pressure. Some doctors believe that the European agency reacted more responsibly. They are concerned about effects of Meridia in patients that have undiagnosed problems.
If you are taking Meridia and have high blood pressure or other cardiovascular problems, call your doctor.
If you live in Kansas or Missouri and someone you love has had a heart attack or stroke after taking Meridia,
