Good news, Kansas City! U.S. driving deaths hit record low.

Although motor vehicle accidents still kill thousands of people every year, driving fatalities have dropped to their lowest level since 1954.

A new report released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation shows that driving fatalities have decreased for 15 quarters in a row. The number of highway fatalities dropped from 37,261 accident deaths in 2008 to 33,963 accident deaths in 2009. This is an impressive decline of 8.9% and the lowest number of recorded highway deaths since the federal government started tracking highway fatality data in 1954.

The government attributes the significant decline in traffic deaths to seat belt use, education programs and stronger enforcement of the law. They also say people are driving less because of the tough economy. Less driving means fewer accidents.

The bad news is that 80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes resulted from some sort of distraction, including eating, drinking, reading, listening to music, talking on a cell phone, and texting. This resulted in about 500,000 injuries and nearly 6,000 deaths. Twenty-eight percent of accidents were specifically caused by cell phone use – both talking and texting.

The Department of Transportation will be targeting its education efforts this year at reducing the problem of distracted driving.

Specific car wreck statistics for Kansas and Missouri are not available at this time.
