Here is a wake-up call for Kansas City. Have you checked the license of your child's school bus driver?
An accident that took place on October 4, 2010, may make you want to do just that in order to feel good about your child's safety. A school bus driver, who was in training for the Carroll County, Georgia school system lost control of the school bus he was driving, veered off the road and rolled the bus killing one high school student and injuring 12 others.
Accidents happen, but in the preliminary investigation of this particular crash authorities found that the driver was not properly licensed to operate the school bus. In Georgia, two special designations are required for school bus drivers, a passenger endorsement and a school bus endorsement. Drivers, once completing the requirments for these endorsements have additions to their licenses indicated by a P and an S. In this case the school bus endorsement was missing from the driver's license.
The school system has indicated this driver was properly licensed, but according to the Georgia Highway Patrol, this driver did not have the school bus endorsement on either his hard copy license or his electronic license.
Sadly, this is no comfort to a family who has lost a child in an accident, or has a child who has been injured.
School bus accidents injure approximately 8,500-12,000 children per year. Learn more about this topic by reading up on the statistics in our article, "
