We all think of sports as games. We love to play and we love to watch. As athletes or even parents of athletes, we know injuries are part of the game. Contact sports like football and rugby are more rough than others like baseball or golf, therefore more serious injury is expected, but you never think that an injury can lead to a serious life threatening illness or disease, but that just may be the case with athletes who suffer repeated head injuries.
A recent study being conducted by doctors at the Boston University Medical Center claims that
athletes who suffer repeated blows to the head and head injuries may be more prone to Traumatic Brain Injury including diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The study was conducted on athlete's who have suffered multiple concussion, including one, who has suffered at least ten known serious head injuries. At least three of them have ALS now. It's unknown whether the repeated head injuries are the cause of the diseases or just make the brain more vulnerable to acquiring the deadly illnesses.
