In 2008, as many as 700 kids passed away in
car accidents. This sad figure is accompanied by an even more frustrating one: about 2 out of every 5 may have been saved if they had been placed in an adequate booster seat.
In light of this and other concerns over the adequacy of booster seats, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has compiled a list of their top-ranked and
worst-ranked booster seats. These booster seats were assessed on their ability to restrain a child in a car accident situation in which the passenger vehicle was only traveling at a speed of 35 miles per hour.
As far as results go, researchers found that some of the booster seats did not properly restrain a dummy that was about the average height and weight of a child who needs to be fitted into a booster seat (but is too big for a safety seat, too small to use only a seat belt). They found that some of the dummies were thrown from the booster seats, many flying forward far enough to crash through the window or slam into the dashboard. In these instances, the booster seats that did not work were ranked among the lowest, and they include:
Evenflo Express (combination highback)
Evenflo Generations 65 (combination highback)
Evenflo Sightseer (highback)
Harmony Baby Armor (dual backless)
Eddie Bauer Deluxe (combination highback)
Eddie Bauer Deluxe 3-in-1 (highback)
Safety 1st All-in-One (3-in-1 highback)
Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite (3-in-1 highback)
If you own one of these booster seats, we would encourage you to purchase another type of booster seat. Not necessarily another brand, however, because several of these brands were ranked among the best, but for different models. To get the complete list, visit the IIHS's page on
booster seat safety rankings.
