It’s the law! Kansas City truck drivers may not text and drive.
Last month, the federal government banned American truck and bus drivers from text messaging while operating commercial vehicles. The ban was announced by the Unite States Department of Transportation. It applies to drivers of commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds. If a driver is caught texting while operating a vehicle, he may be subject to civil and criminal penalties up to $2,750.
Drivers who text are twenty times to get into an accident while driving than drivers who are not texting. According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) research, drivers who are sending or receiving text messages remove their eyes from the road for approximately 4.6 out of every 6 seconds. This means their eyes are off the road more than two-thirds of the time! Would you call this safe driving? At 55 miles per hour, a driver can travel the length of a football field while his eyes are off the road.
The FMCSA will continue to investigate driver distraction and new regulations are expected in the near future.
