Gardening is a fun, educational and healthy activity for children. At least, it is if your child’s gardening tools do not contain high levels of
lead paint. If you bought children’s gardening tools at a Jo-Ann’s store, your child may have been exposed to dangerous levels of lead.
The Robbie Duckie gardening toys were sold in 2007 at Jo-Ann stores throughout the United States, including Kansas City. About 97,000 of the Chinese-manufactured toys were recalled. The lead paint is present in the beak of the duck-shaped watering can and on the handles of the gardening tools.
Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts has agreed to pay $50,000 in fines to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for selling children’s products tainted with high levels of lead paint. However, this fine seems inadequate to cover the damage that lead poisoning can do.
Lead is toxic if eaten and can cause brain damage, kidney damage and other health problems, including irritability, weight loss, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, fatigue, anemia, vomiting, constipation and learning difficulties. For this reason, lead paint is banned in almost all toys and children’s products.
When companies take short cuts to increase their profits, children are put at risk. This is against the law.
If your child is using Robbie Duckie gardening tools, stop using them immediately. Go to your doctor and ask for a lead test. If your child has been exposed to high amounts of lead in a children’s product, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact the Kansas City
