Kansas City Man Killed After Being Hit By Car While Riding Bicycle

Riding a bicycle can be a relaxing way to exercise.  However, on Friday morning, an innocent bike ride proved to be fatal for a Kansas City man.  Police say the man was riding down the west side of Independence Ave. and Chestnut Trafficway after 8:00 a.m. when he must have lost his balance and fell into the path of a car.  Emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene of the accident.

Accidents like these are both tragic and unnecessary but fortunately they can easily be avoided.  As the laws of the road have evolved over the years, so have laws concerning bicyclists being on the road.  Avoiding distractions and a mutual respect between drivers and bicyclists can go a long way in ensuring the roads are safe for everyone.  It's no secret that bicyclists are taking a great risk by being on the road as they are more vulnerable to injury in case of an accident.

The bottom line is when these types of accidents happen the fault can lie with both parties.  Drivers need to be aware of bicyclists as much as cyclists need to respect drivers and follow the rules of the road, by maintaining proper speeds, using hand signals and not abusing the road.
