A new consent form may help patients in Kansas City and nationwide.

Many medical treatments are risky and can lead to complications. That is why when you go to a hospital for surgery, you are given a consent form.  When you sign the form, you acknowledge that the doctor has explained the procedure and risks involved and that you understand the explanation and agree to the risks.

Most of us routinely sign these forms, often without reading them.  Do we really understand what we are signing? Researchers found that a few days after surgery, about half of surgery patients could not give any details about the procedure they had undergone.  About a quarter didn’t even know which body parts had been operated on.

A new computerized form has been developed at Kansas City’s St. Luke’s Hospital and is being used for a common heart procedure called angioplasty.  Before surgery, a nurse types in the patient’s medical history.  The computer prints out a custom-tailored consent form that gives the patient’s own odds of surviving the procedure or of suffering complications.  The nurse then goes over the form with the patient.

It is important for all patients to know that signing a consent form does not give a doctor permission to do surgery on the wrong side, prescribe the wrong medicine, misdiagnose, or otherwise provide negligent or inadequate care during or after surgery.
