To much surprise, the number one most frequent injury that occurs in children as a result of using a medical device is the improper use of contact lenses.  At first glance, this doesn't seem like a very important issue, but when 25% of 70,000 emergency room visits for adolescents can be attributed to contact lens misuse or mishandling, it begins to gain more attention.  The consequences of misusing this medical device include corneal abrasions, serious infections, and damage to the clear tissue that surrounds the eyeball.  Parents should be aware of these dangers and should discuss preventive measures with children.

This dangerous medical device ranks at the very top of twelve other medical devices that have been known to cause complications for children and teenagers.  Some of the more serious ones include:

-Implantable Devices, such as brain shunts for children who suffer from hydrocephalus
-Insulin Pumps, for children suffering from Type I Diabetes
-Chest Catheters, for children who have undergone chemotherapy from home

However, the most common medical devices that cause injury and infection to young children include

-Pelvic Instruments, can cause skin tears during gynecological exams

-Hypodermic Needles, can break off and become lodged in patients’ skin

-Ear Tubes, which cause infections in the ear

If you believe a child you love has suffered because a medical device was either defective or used improperly by a medical official we urge you to contact any one of our Kansas City-based Child Injury and Accident Lawyers for a free initial consultation.  The lawyers of Roswold Law Group are committed to improving the well-being of child injury and accident victims, and with over 15 years of experience, we can help you.
