An accident in
Leavenworth County along 24/40 Highway left a man unconscious in his vehcile following a collision with a dear. According to the victim he was forced to swerve to miss a deer crossing the highway around 11:30 p.m. Sunday evening. The vehicle left the roadway, went down an embankment, through a fence, over shallow water and came to rest in a nearby field. The driver was left unconscious and remained in the field until 6:30 a.m. Monday morning. He then phoned his wife who called 911 for help.
The Kansas Highway Patrol found the man and called in a rescue helicopter to transport him to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate this incident as there were no indications of braking at the place the victim indicated he left the roadway.
Vehicle accidents involving deer are all too common in our area at this time of year. October through December is breeding time for deer and also the time most deer accidents occur. Drivers need to be especially careful anytime between dusk and dawn. Deer are nocturnal animals, so crashes are more likely to happen at night.
