A man was hit by a train at a Lee's Summit railroad crossing was seriously injured Thursday morning. The driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital for treatment was what authorities described as serious injury. The driver was thrown 30 feet from his F-10 pick-up during the accident and the truck was pushed 100 yards down the track. No one on the train was injured.
In the United States there are approximately 3,000 railroad crossing accidents each year, with 1,000 of these being fatal. Drivers are frequently unable to gauge the speed of an oncoming train and think they can "make it" around crossing arms or don't heed other warning signals. Drivers should always respect the warnings at railroad crossings. The size difference between trains and other vehicles is enormous. The size, weight and speed of trains make stopping a lengthy process and adds further danger to anyone hit by an oncoming train.
As
Kansas City Auto Accident Attorneys, we hope for a swift recovery for the injured driver in this case. We also hope that all Kansas and Missouri drivers take notice and use extra caution when driving through railroad crossings. It's not easy to judge the speed of an oncoming train.
