Quite frequently, American parents and caretakers drive off in their cars without stopping to properly buckle up their children. Whether it be seat belts, safety restraints, or car seats. Young children need to be secured into place before traveling in a moving vehicle. Even when traveling at relatively low speeds, children can suffer serious and even life-threatening physical injury.
The most recent
example of this came late last week. A little boy of about 18 months did not have a seatbelt placed on him by his mother. The little boy, Jacob Mentor, was involved in an accident that threw his tiny body out of the vehicle he was a passenger in. His body landed in a soft patch of grass only after traveling 18 feet in the air, over a large wall, and projected 75 feet away from the vehicle he was riding in. Could he have remained inside of the vehicle if he had been properly buckled up? Absolutely.
The little boy is fine. He sustained no serious or life-threatening injuries. Additionally, his sister who was also a passenger, and his mother were all safe. But this accident is a bewildering exception.
Obviously, the mother of these two children was considerably fortunate not to have lost both of her children or her own life. However, she does run the risk of losing an extensive amount of time with them. In total, the mother of these two children, Rosaline Jean-Baptiste, has nine counts against her. She was charged on Monday morning with child neglect, along with other charges related to the incident. To learn more about these charges,
