Kudos to Missouri lawmakers!
Drunk driving laws in Missouri just got tougher. Effective August 28th, new laws go into effect that strengthen the drunk driving laws for both first time offenders as well as repeat offenders. In addition, the state will maintain a central data base that records every DWI and will be available to all law enforcement agencies and judges. Not only will the data base keep track of new DWIs, but agencies have been instructed to put in past offenders for every recorded DWI.
It appears that these new laws will make our roads safer, but the new regulations also come with a mountain of paperwork for law enforcement and the prosecutor's office. Of course, that paperwork comes at a cost, wihich will certainly be passed onto the offender trying to mount a defense for their charge. It has been estimated that a DWI that used to cost around $3,000 in increased insurance rates, court costs and attorney fees will now be closer to $6,000-$8,000.
Gone are the days when first time offenders got a simple slap on the wrist. With the new laws first time offenders will likely face jail time. Plus, with the central data base, repeat offenders will have a harder time trying to circumvent the system, which should help prosecutors.
