Missouri Governor Jay Nixon issued a press release encouraging all
motorists in Missour to wear their seat belts. This statement followed a recent accident involving the governor wear he was not wearing his seat belt. The accident occurred in Jefferson City when the highway patrol car the governor was riding in was struck from behind. The governor, who was sitting in the back seat, experienced some neck pain following the accident and was treated and released from a local hospital. In Missouri, back seat passengers are not legally required to wear seat belts.
Said Nixon: "I would recommend that all Missourians - including me - wear a seat belt whenever available."
It's no secret that
wearing a seatbelt can save a life, so three big cheers for the governor's message,as seat belt use in Missouri is lower than the national average. Nationwide seat belt use is around 85%, however Missouri reports in at about 75%. Why the 10% difference? Missouri is one of a few states that does not allow drivers to be pulled over and ticketed for individuals not wearing seat belts.
