The first winter blast of 2011 put
Kansas City road crews and driver to the test last week and more could be ahead for later this week. As we start the new year, the attorneys at Roswold Law Group think now is a great time to focus on driving in inclement weather and precautions we all can take to be a safer driver.
TIPS FOR DRIVING IN WINTER WEATHER
- Be prepared. Check the weather conditions before you leave and have your car ready for driving. This may mean throwing a blanket and scraper into your car, or putting snow tire and chains on your vehicle, depending on the weather conditions at hand.
- See the big picture. Winter drivers need to look ahead to assess the road conditions. Drivers should double the distance you normally allow between you and the vehicle in front of you. A good winter driver looks ahead and anticipates problems.
- Slow down. Driving too fast for the conditions is the number one cause of accidents in snow and ice.
- Brake before you enter a corner. Slowing your vehicle before you get to a corner will help you maneuver through the corner safely.
- Understand and use your vehicles controls. Smooth steering, use of 4-wheel or all-wheel drive and proper winter braking techniques are all critical factors in safe winter driving.
- Know your car. Understand where the weight resides, whether you have a rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive it is important to know how your car reacts.
- Learn how to control a skid. Most people, when their car starts to skid, want to slam on the brakes. Unfortunately, this usually makes the situation worse. The best advice is to turn into the skid and slightly accelerate. The best place to learn this is on a controlled driving course.
