New FDA Rules Attempt to Limit Radiation Overdose

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday, April 8, that it will be taking steps to reduce overdoses, underdoses and other errors in radiation therapy. The FDA said it had received more than 1,200 complaints in the past ten years about the radiation machines that deliver therapy to cancer patients and it hopes that new rules will reduce injury to patients.

The FDA says it will no longer allow new radiation therapy equipment to enter the health care market through the streamlined approval process that sometimes uses outside, third-party reviewers.

Seventy-four percent of the reported problems involved linear accelerators. These computer-controlled machines generate high-powered beams that target and destroy cancer cells. Problems with computer software accounted for most of the errors.

Medical mistakes made during radiation therapy can cause serious injury and even death. Some mistakes are due to defective medical devices; others are caused by user error. Regardless of the cause of a radiation mistake, the consequences can be tragic.

If you have been injured because of radiation error, you have rights. Contact the Kansas City medical malpractice and defective medical device attorneys at the Roswold Law Group.
