Toyota has announced another recall. The car company has issued a voluntary safety recall on about 600,000 1998-2010 Toyota Sienna minivans to address potential corrosion on the cable holding the spare-tire carrier. The recall involves first- and second-generation front-wheel drive Siennas and focuses those models used in cold climates where heavy use of road salt may accelerate corrosion.
Because of the corrosion, the cable securing the tire may break and drop the spare tire onto the road creating a road hazard for following vehicles that could potentially cause a serious
car crash.
The recall covers vehicles in 20 states that Toyota considers to have high road salt usage and the District of Columbia. The states are: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
There is no fix. Toyota is asking owners to bring their minivans to their local dealers for an inspection. Although salt use in Kansas and Missouri is not as widely used as in the eastern states, those who bought a used vehicle or have moved to Kansas City from the east coast may want to get their vehicle checked. Toyota says that all owners are welcome to have their Sienna inspected at their local dealer.
