One child had to be air-lifted to Children's Mercy Hospital last week. This child was in critical condition, and eight other children were taken to the hospital and treated for
severe injuries that had occurred on the way home from their Youth Church Camp.
The camp was known as Amazing Grace Baptist Camp in Franklin County. The church was put on by Tri-City Ministries. An official from the ministries has informed the Kansas City Star that all of the children who were injured are doing alright and they do not believe the children are facing a
life-threatening situation.
So what happened? The police cannot say indefinitely, and they are not completely positive on what caused this
accident. But they do know that the bus driver had swerved, and when the bus swerved the driver had to re-adjust to get the bus back on the right track. This dangerous maneuver is what caused the bus to flip over onto it's left side. It is unclear at this time what happened. And police expect that it will take take at least a week to arrive at any possible conclusions. They will need to talk to the driver, the witnesses, and the victims first.
In total, there were twenty-nine children on board aged eight to fifteen, four teenage camp counselors, and the bus driver. Only nine children were injured in total suffering from minor injuries such as cuts and bruises to major injuries such as fractured limbs. The incident occurred on interstate 35 at approximately 10:30 in the morning. It took about an hour and a half for rescue teams to reach the children and for the other emergency officials to clear the accident.
