Proposed Missouri law to protect Kansas City youth from brain injuries

The Missouri legislature is considering a new law that would prevent young athletes who suffer concussions from returning to practice or playing games until they have been cleared by a health care provider.

There is a high risk of brain injury after a concussion even for professional athletes.  Repeated concussions can result in permanent brain injury.  The effects are worse in young athletes. Children and teenagers need more time than adults to recover from concussions and there is a risk of serious brain damage if a child returns to the activity too soon.

The new legislation is modeled after a Washington state law that is named for a child whose life threatened by a traumatic brain injury sustained after returning to a football game too soon after a concussion.  At least six states now have mandatory restrictions on young athletes with concussions.

The Missouri legislation would also require that athletes and their parents receive information packets about concussions at the beginning of each year.

Brain injuries affect more than a million children each year. Many of these injuries lead to permanent brain damage requiring long term treatment and rehabilitation.  If your child is a victim of traumatic brain injury due to the negligence of a driver, teacher, babysitter or coach, the Roswold Law Group can help. Our Kansas City personal injury lawyers have experience with child injury cases and getting full insurance compensation for the victims of brain injury.  Contact us at 888-348-2616.
