Safe Driving Tips for Sharing the Road with Kansas and Missouri Big Rig Semi-Trucks

At Roswold Law Group, we've seen enough serious injury and fatal accidents involving big rig trucks to know that it's not always the big rig or the truck driver that is always guilty for causing the accident.  In fact, if you search through our Kansas City Trucking Accident and Injury blog, you will see a number of examples, including a big rig trucking accident in Cleveland that was caused by a driver forcing the truck off the road.

We know that the best way to prevent serious injury or death of motorists and truck drivers alike is to avoid these accidents all together, which is not impossible.  It's just going to take all motorists taking responsibility.  Here are some tips for sharing the road with a semi-trucks:

  • Never Ride in a Trucker's Blind Spot.  A semi-truck driver has significant blind spots at the right/ rear of the vehicle and right front corner of the truck.  If you're going to pass a truck, get it over with.  Never ride side by side if you can control it because you never know when you'll slip into one of these blind spots.
  • Be Patient.  It's not as easy as you think it is to turn or reverse big rig trucks.  Next time you're rushing to get through an intersection, keep in mind that the truck driver isn't trying to slow everyone down, they're trying to make sure they turn safely without hitting anyone.  It's for your safety.
  • Never Cut off a Trucker.  You know you've done it.  You need to get over and it looks like there's enough room in between the two vehicles next to you and one of them is a semi truck, so you hit the gas, shoot the gap then slam on the brakes so you can turn or exit a highway.  Don't do this.  It's impossible for a truck driver to anticipate what you're trying to do.

Our experienced Kansas City Trucking Accident and Injury Attorneys work hard to protect the motorists in Kansas and Missouri and we're proud to say that because of on going truck driver training, Missouri Trucking Accidents and Fatalitities were down last year.  We hope everyone on the road is watching our for each other, whether you drive a car, motorcycle or big rig.  If we're all sharing the resonsibility of road safety, obeying traffic laws and avoiding distractions we can continue to drive those statistics down.

If you or someone you love has suffered a serious injury in an accident involving a big rig or semi truck, you and your family may be entitled to compensation for your losses.  Don't delay, contact the Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers of Roswold Law Group.
