Safety Tips When Crossing Railroad Tracks in Kansas City

Railroad crossing accidents happen for a number of reasons. Including improper lights or warning signals; improper sight lines preventing a driver from seeing an oncoming train; improperly parked train near a crossing; engineer’s failure to sound the whistle or horn of the approaching train or driver negligence of driving around the gates.

When a crossing signal is not present, stop, look and listen.  Approach the crossing slowly.  Roll down your window and listen for an approaching train.  Look both ways.  Trains can come from either direction.  Once you see and hear that the coast is clear, cross the tracks.  If your car ever gets stuck on the tracks, get out of the car, walk away from the tracks and call 911 immediately.
