A school carnival at Lakewood Elementary in Kansas City, Mo. nearly became a scene of tragedy after
a six year old boy got trapped in an inflatable obstacle course and nearly suffocated. A couple of alert classmates noticed the kid was trapped and wasn't moving and notified an employee of the equipment rental company that was on hand. After being freed, the boy was given CPR and cardiopulmonary resuscitation by members of the Cay County sheriff's department, who luckily were on hand running a child ID booth. By the time emergency crews arrived, the boy was breathing on his own. On the way to Children's Mercy Hospital, the boy had trouble breathing again and had to be given ventilation treatments upon arrival at the hospital.
As parents, we all go to great lenghts to protect our children. Bike helmets. Seat belts. Look both ways before you cross the street. You never think that tragedy can strike at something as innocent as a school carnival. Fun Services of Kansas City, the equipment supply company that supplied the equipment on this night has had a respected record in Kansas City for 35 years. But sometimes, even the slightest oversight can come back to haunt you and
cause and injury to a child.
Be sure you understand how to install, maintain and use equipment before letting the kids have their way at it. At those ages, they are so happy to be able to run and bounce they aren't thinking of the possible dangers that could be lurking in an inflatalbe bounce house or obstacle course. Always have at least one person on sight that is certified in CPR.
