Traffic violations go up and crime goes down? It seems true in Shawnee.
Police in Shawnee lauched a new program developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that has had very positive results in the first month of the program. The project, called the Data Driven Approach to Crime and Traffic Safety, basically has police identify high crime and high traffic accident areas within a city. The areas where these two overlap are where police concentrate their efforts.
In Shawnee, that area was identified as 75th Street between Switzer and Quivera Roads. Police stepped up their presence in this area by issuing more traffic violation tickets and warnings and during the month of July saw a 27% reduction in crime. Quite a significant reduction and all without increasing funding or staffing to get the job done.
As
Kansas City Auto Accident Lawyers, we are always pleased to see police focus on dangerous traffic accident areas within their cities. It is interesting that NHTSA has tied these dangerous traffic areas to crime and even more interesting that increases in traffic violations seem to positively impact crime statistics.
In Shawnee, police are continuing the program for six months to prove its effectiveness. At Roswold Law Group we hope other local law enforcement agencies are paying attention to this program and, if effective, will roll out similar programs in their jurisdiction.
