Sports-related Knee Injuries Rise in Kansas City Youth

CBN News reported that the number of sports-related injuries in youth is only rising as the number of kids playing organized sports rises. Some parents are cautious and don't allow their children to play more than once a week and don't let them travel to games. Many feel that pain isn't worth playing the game.

"You get a knee injury when you're 10 years old and it may be something you have to deal with the rest of your life. Knees are very tricky," a proud and cautious soccer mom said.

However, studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of youth sports-knee injuries. If a child has to have knee repair surgery, it can be a drawn out process and disrupt their growth. Doctors sometimes have to drill through the growth plate, which can disrupt the size and shape of it. Over the last decade, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found a spike of more than 400% among their young patients.

According to Dr. Laith Jazrawi, chief of sports medicine with NYU, playing sports year-round has become very popular and the more often you play, the more likely you are to be injured.

Some children think that the risk is worth it and would continue playing even if they were injured, but do children really know the long-term risk that they are putting themselves in? Though it would be tempting to protect a child by keeping them out of sports all together, orthopedists say that isn't the answer. Children should learn proper techniques and conditioning exercises to lessen the stress on their bones.

If your child or the child of a loved one has been injured playing sports, the Kansas City Injury Attorneys may be able to help you understand your rights.  You can call 816-471-5111 to speak to our Kansas City Child Injury lawyers at no obligation or use the "Just Ask" section of our website.
