Following a few days of spring weather, the Kansas City metro area was shocked by a spring snow storm that caused several accidents in the area. The first accident on U.S. Highway 169 south of 175th Street occurred when a vehicle, traveling south on Highway 169, hit a tow truck that was attempting to pull another car out of a ditch. The accident happened just after 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The driver, Courtney W. Smith, 21 of Overland Park was killed. It was reported that Mr. Smith was unable to stop his vehicle due to slick road conditions.
Another Overland Park man was killed when his pickup truck left the roadway and struck a tree on Saturday afternoon. The driver was traveling west on 91st Street near Goddard when he lost control of his vehicle striking the tree. Police reported the driver was the only one inside the pickup truck.
An ATA bus was T-boned Saturday night at Swope Parkway and Woodland Avenue injuring 5 people. MAST reported that five ambulances were called to the scene. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life threatening.
Sunday morning 3 people were injured when a driver of an SUV spun out due to road conditions and hit an oncoming car head on. The SUV was traveling on Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park between 72nd and 75th Streets. Three people were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
