The Freedom of Road Riders Demand Safer Highway in MO

The Freedom of Road Riders are a motorcycle safety group. Because of many motorcycle accidents along Highway 94 in St. Charles County, the motorcycle safety group is calling for potholes to be repaired. One pothole south of Defiance, MO in particular has been used as an example.

A woman, Jean Pressley, is recovering from a surgery at Mercy Hospital St. Louis that she had to have because of a motorcycle accident. Her fiancé found out that there was another patient, on the same floor of Mercy, who was injured in a motorcycle accident because of the very same pothole.

When riding a motorcycle, special protective clothing and equipment should be used:
• Properly fitting and fastened helmet with the D O T label
• Durable, non-slip gloves
• Proper footwear, such as leather boots or durable athletic shoes that cover the ankles
• Eye Protection - goggles or helmet with face-shield
• Durable long sleeved jackets
• Fitted trousers

Avoiding Accidents:

• Be respectful and courteous to other motorists
• Do not tailgate
• Do no ride between lanes of slow moving or stopped traffic
• Know and obey traffic laws
• Leave muffler in place to avoid noise pollution
• Always use signals appropriately
• Use defensive driving - be even more alert at intersections, check rearview mirrors before changing lanes or making a quick stop, try looking ahead to anticipate problems and road hazards.
• Always assume that you are invisible to other motorists and act accordingly such as; positioning yourself to be seen, using headlights day and night.
