Toddler Dies in Omaha Hospital: Drug Overdose?

In late February, a little girl just shy of her 2nd birthday died while being treated by an Omaha hospital.

Officials suspect that the little girl may have been improperly administered the drug, Heparin.  To learn more about this drug, click here.   The drug is typically very effective at improving the experience of hospital patients requiring surgery, dialysis, or feeding tubes, and in many cases, is a life-saving drug.  But if adminstered improperly, the drug can also have fatal effects.

But this Heparin incident is not the first.  In fact, about three years ago the drug was misused in a more famous incident.  When celebrity, Dennis Quaid, almost lost his twin infants after the drug was administered to them in a dangerously high dosage.  However, Quaid's children survived the overdose.

Hospital officials in Omaha have taken the necessary steps to ensure that this incidents does not happen again.  Even going so far as to by a machine that would be able to alert nurses if a patient is receiving too much Heparin.

At this time, it is suspected that a hospital employee may have overlooked that the dosage was too high, but officials are still investigating.  It is suspected that this investigation will require at least two months to complete.
