Train Accident on Bridge in Atherton, MO. Claims Life of 23 year-old Man

Last week, near Atherton, Missouri, a 23 year-old man was killed when he was hit by a train on a bridge over the Blue River. Reports from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department say that three men were fishing when they decided to cross the bridge to the other side of the river when they heard the train coming. The other two men were able to get to safety.

Crossing a train track can be especially tricky, especially on a bridge where there is not way out. The best thing to do is to stop, look and listen and if you feel it is safe, cross and cross quickly. Just because you are safe for a moment, doesn't mean a train isn't coming. Train speeds can be tough to judge.
