Red light cameras may have some use, but they don't seem to be helping prevent auto injury accidents. That's the conclusion in Washington, Missouri, after the city council has voted to end a three year program using red light cameras.
The cameras will be pulled cameras from two high traffic areas after deciding they weren't producing the results that had been hoped for. Three years ago, two cameras were installed in town at two different intersections. One of them, the intersection at Highway 100 and Route 47 has seen 13 less accidents than the prior three year period. Injury accidents have decreased by 2 in the same measured time but the overall number of actual injuries has increased from 21 to 32.
The other, installed at the intersection of Route A and Highway 100 saw accidents drop by 4 to 51 but saw a more significant drop in injuries, dropping from 20 to 9 over the previous 3 years.
