What’s the most common deadly disease in Kansas City nursing homes?
What is the most common disease in Kansas City nursing homes? Cancer? Heart disease? Alzheimer’s? No. Surprisingly, the deadly disease most likely to be found in a nursing home is pneumonia. And, it is often caused by poor nursing home conditions.
Pneumonia is easy to catch if you live in a heavily populated area, do not eat a healthy diet of fresh food, do not wash your hands often, or are overweight. When elderly receive appropriate care, pneumonia can be prevented or detected early. However, if there is abuse or neglect in the nursing homes, the elderly residents may be more susceptible to the disease and are more likely to suffer serious complications.
Nursing home-acquired pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia are significant causes of death for the elderly. Up to 41% of elderly victims die from pneumonia.
Initial symptoms of pneumonia include: cough, altered mental status, loss of appetite, weakness, restlessness, agitation, falling and incontinence. Many of these symptoms are not uncommon among the elderly and may be overlooked if a nursing home employee is no familiar with the patient. As the disease progresses, the victim may experience fever, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing.
