Winter Safety Tips for Your Kansas City Family; Protect Your Child When Sledding or Skating

At Roswold Law Group, we know winter season in Kansas and Missouri can be tons of fun for kids and adults alike, with all the exciting things you can do following a good snow fall or freeze.  However, if you're not careful that fun can turn deadly and a simple snow day can lead to a very serious injury for you or your child.

Our experienced Kansas City Child Injury Lawyers want you to be safe this winter.  Safety begins before you go outside.  Bundle up with proper leg and feet protection.  Layer up.  Wear properly fitting hats and gloves as well as a proper winter coat fully zipped and or buttoned up.

Sledding Safety:

  • Always sled on gently sloping terrain that is covered in snow-- not ice.  Parents, be sure to check hills for obstacles such as rocks that can be a dangerous hazard.
  • When you sled, sit upright.  This can prevent serious brain and spinal injuries in the event of a collision.
  • To protect from head injury, have your child wear a helment when its their turn.

Ice Skating Safety:
  • Properly check surroundings to ensure for safety.  This means checking to make sure ice is strong enough to skate on.  Check for posted signs and if necessary contact authorities to find out what locations have been approved.
  • Teach your child to always skate with the flow of the crowd and never cut across the ice.
  • Use the buddy system; never skate alone.

We hope you use this important Winter Safety Tips to protect your family and remember, your children should be supervised at all times, because the reality is serious injury accidents can happen fast.  Parents, make sure you are properly monitoring your child and even engage your child during their play time.  During these bitterly cold days, make sure they aren't out for too long.  Be realistic.
