Does the federal government support a ban on using cell phones while driving in Kansas City? Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a new recommendation regarding the use of cell phones while driving in the United States. Specifically, the NTSB is recommending that all use of cell phone and portable electronic equipment be banned while driving. This includes using a cell phone via hands free or voice activated technology. The recommendation comes, at least in part, because of the deadly August 2010 Missouri highway accident in which a driver who was allegedly texting and driving killed two people and injured 38 others.
While the NTSB does not have the authority to create such a regulation, its recommendations are typically influential among federal and state lawmakers. As a Kansas City personal injury attorney, I will be watching the actions of Kansas and Missouri closely to see if anything changes in light of the NTSB recommendations.
