FOG & SMOKE: A DEADLY COMBINATION – HOW TO STAY SAFE

In recent news is the story of a major pile up on I-75 in Gainesville, FL that claimed 11 lives and left 21 people injured. The pile up occurred following a string of accidents caused by significant fog combined with smoke. This combination of fog and smoke is sometimes referred to as “Super-Fog.” In 2008, a similar incident occurred on I-4 in Polk County, FL when smoke combined with fog caused a massive pile up that claimed 4 lives and left numerous people injured. A similar accident occurred closer to Kansas City in 2010. Although there was no fog to blame, there was a thick, black smoke from a brush fire that significantly reduced visibility on the road resulting in a 20-car pile-up that occurred in southeast Missouri along U.S. 60 and injured 33 people.
These unfortunate, heart breaking stories have prompted us to provide a little advice and some tips for driving in fog, smoke and super-fog. Fog is considered one of the most dangerous driving hazards, and we all need to proceed cautiously while traveling in foggy/smoky conditions.

TIPS FOR SAFE DRIVING IN FOG AND/OR SMOKE:

If You Can Avoid Driving, You Should. This is not always a possibility but if you can put off your trip until the fog lifts, this would be the safest course of action.
Use Low Beam Lights. Using high beams will actually reduce visibility further because they reflect off the fog.
Make Sure Your Windshield And Headlights Are Clean. This will reduce glare and improve visibility.
Slow Down. Fog can give you the illusion that you are driving slower than you actually are so keep an eye on your speed.
Be Patient. Wait to pass other vehicles and/or change lanes until the fog or smoke clears.
Eliminate Distractions. Turn off your cell phone and radio, so you can hear other vehicles that may be around you that you cannot see.
Use windshield Wipers. When fog is heavy, using windshield wipers can improve visibility because fog can cause moisture on the windshield. You should also try turning on the defrost.
Use Your Turn Signals. Turn on your blinkers well in advance and brake early to give sufficient notice to other cars traveling near you.
If The Fog Or Smoke Is So Dense That You Cannot See At All, Pull All The Way Over But Do Not Stop On A Freeway Or Busy Road. Stopping directly in the roadway could lead to the beginning of a chain-reaction crash. Be sure to use your signal if you are pulling off the road because other drivers tend to follow tail lights in the fog. Pull over as far as possible to avoid obstructing traffic and turn on your hazard lights/emergency flashers.
Maintain a safe driving distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This is a good tip even in good weather to avoid rear-end collisions.

Student Athlete Appeals to Committee About Concussion Caused Problems: What That Means for Athletic Youth in KS and MO

This particular hearing was mostly about how concussions affect student athletes in the classroom and especially how female student are affected. Studies have shown that female athletes may be affected more easily by concussions and they are “just as likely” as male athletes to lie about their condition so that they can get back to playing sports.
Sarah Rainey was a 14 year-old soccer player when she was knocked unconscious during a game. After regaining consciousness, she took a sip of water and rejoined the game. Rainey has no memory of the rest of the game, which includes two overtimes.
She went before the House Committee on Education and Labor to tell them about how her day to day life has suffered to do a concussion. Sarah explained how she has to use a calculator to do simple mathematical equations when she didn’t have to do that before and how it takes her three times longer to do anything.
Rainey often deals with head aches and, even when that isn’t an issue, has to deal with constant pressure in her head as if she is wearing a compression headband. She has not played since that game and often has to go to the nurse’s office during classes to sleep. Although she knew that she would have to be sidelined for a while, she didn’t expect it to go on for so long.
Sarah Rainey feels that the C.D.C.’s slogan, “It’s better to miss one game than a whole season.”, minimizes the seriousness of the affect that concussions can have on students.
Hearings before this one concentrating on what doctors and coaches had to say about concussions management in football and more concussion education. Some legislation has been passed and some bills are being considered.
Michele Pelton, a former high school student who had suffered a concussion her senior year explained how, instead of enjoying the normal senior activities, she stayed home because of constant pain and depression. Her life became a blur. She suffers from memory loss, difficultly concentrating, slow processing speed, cognitive effects, and depression. For Pelton, every day is a battle. In attending the hearing, she hopes to help keep others from having to live the way she lives.
Before this hearing, most discussion concentrated on keeping athletes safe from suffering a concussion while on the field. This hearing, instead, focused on managing concussions in the classroom. It is important to educate teachers, as well as coaches, about the signs of a concussion; listlessness, headaches, dizziness and being unresponsive. These issues should be noticed and addressed by teachers. Students spend more time in the classroom than they do on the field and how much they can tolerate in the classroom should be respected by teachers.
There are hopes that more money can be given to each state so that they can better educate teachers, coaches, parents, and young athletes about the affects of concussions and what to do.

17 Year-old Pedestrian Hit While Crossing Highway in Missouri

Around 1 a.m. on Saturday, December 24^th, 2011, a 17 year-old teenage boy was hit by a car while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 50. It has not been said why James A. Kelly, of Holden, MO was trying to cross the highway. The vehicle that struck Kelly, after he stepped out into the right lane, was a Chevrolet Impala, driven by Debra F. Schlomer.

A call was made to the Highway Patrol, telling them that the accident happened west of M-131. This caused a delay in getting medical attention to Kelley because it actually happened about 2 miles east of M-131. Even with the delay, Kelly arrived alive at the Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO, but with serious injuries. As of about noon on December 24^th, 2011, his condition has not yet been reported.

South Bound Missouri 45 Wreck Cause for Death of Benedictine College Basketball Player

The Platte County Sheriff’s Department got a call about a one-car wreck on Missouri 45 a little bit before 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning, December 21rst, 2011.

Reginald Demps Jr. and his passenger and teammate, Quaran Johnson were heading south on Missouri 45 near Platte City,MO when the accident occurred. The two were headed home for Christmas. The Platte County Sheriff’s Department’s Captain Erik Holland says that they are not yet sure what caused the accident, but that he suspects that the slick road conditions were the culprit.

Tragically, Demps was killed in the wreck, but Johnson was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and should be home for Christmas.

Ryan Moody, the Benedictine Ravens basketball coach, said, “This is a devastating and tragic day for Benedictine College, Benedictine men’s basketball, and most importantly, for the family of R.J. He had an impact on his coaches, his teammates, and the entire Benedictine College community.”

Many accidents like this happen every year during the winter season. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while traveling to visit family for the holidays:

Get plenty rest so that you can stay awake and alert while traveling.
Have your tires, windshield wipers, vehicle fluids, breaks, belts, and lights checked by a professional.

Always buckle up.
Drive defensively – be aware of the vehicles around you and be ready to react if they make a mistake.

Kansas City Commuters, Beware of Slick Spots

During the rush hour on the morning of December 21rst, 2011, there were many wrecks on Kansas City roads due to slick spot. These slick spots formed when the cloud cover cleared for a long enough amount of time to allow temperatures to drop low enough to freeze parts of the roads.

Mainly bridges, over passes, ramps, and parking lots had slick spots that surprised commuters because they were difficult or impossible to see due to the fact that they simply looked like part of the wet road. Don’t get too comfortable on the main roads though. These also had some slick spots.

A special weather warning was issued by The National Weather Service out of Pleasant Hill, MO, early in the morning on the 21rst to let commuters know to be weary of the slick spots that they may run into. They suggested that everyone simply be cautious as they drive since it would be hard to know where the slick spots would be. The National Weather Service suspected that the slick spots would melt around 8 a.m., when the temperatures would rise enough to melt them.

Although this part of Kansas hasn’t had snow like most of Kansas west of us, we should all be careful as we traverse the roads, especially in the early morning and at night, when the temperatures are lower. Always have a car emergency kit in your vehicle incase you are in a wreck. It would also be a good idea to have your windshield wipers, tires, lights, belts and vehicle fluids checked out by a professional at the beginning of the winter season.

As always, drive defensively. Meaning that you should be attentive of what the people around you are doing and always assume that the other commuters can not see you. Also try getting plenty of sleep so that you can be alert.

Bumbo Baby Seats Still Causing Injuries in Children

Children are still being injured from the Bumbo Baby Seat even after a 2007 recall.

Over 300 injuries have been reported according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission this year alone.

The Bumbo Seat is a molded plastic seat which is used to help babies sit up on their own before they’re able to do so. The company has sold nearly 4 million in the United States, but its safety record is uncertain.

The product was recalled in 2007 after 28 injuries – including many skull fractures. The company then included warning labels on the product saying it shouldn’t be used on elevated surfaces.

But litigations this year say there have been more injuries to children.

Many are accusing Toys R Us retailers of knowingly selling a product that has caused injuries. One of the buyers at Toys R Us is quoted in the litigation as saying that she had never seen an infant product like that without a safety restraint, such as a seat belt. She went on to say that after learning about the severity of the injuries from the Bumbo seat, she didn't think it was safe.

Bumbo has released a statement saying that they stand by their product and believe it is safe when used correctly. "The Bumbo baby seat is a safe product for infants when it is used as intended: on the floor and never on an elevated surface," the statement says. "Children should always been closely supervised when they are in the Bumbo seat." The company also says it is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to educate parents on the correct use of the seat.

The only Bumbo Seat competitor, bØbØPOD, added a seatbelt after the Bumbo recall.

An attorney in one of the litigations alleges in the Bumbo lawsuit that safer alternative design existed. They are arguing that Bumbo could have made the Bumbo seat wider at the base, raised the side and back of the seat, installed a safety harness or seatbelt, anything to prevent a child from falling out of the seat.

Four vehicles were involved in a wreck on East bound K-10 on Thursday, December 8^th. It has been reported that there was a roll-over. There were serious injuries; at least one person what taken to an area hospital by ambulance.

Always be attentive of what is going on around you.
Drive defensively, but courteously. Stay calm even if the driver of another vehicle is not calm and don’t take what other drivers do personally. Anger will only make things worse.
Be comfortable with the route you will be taking. Using a hands free GPS device, if you have access to one, can help you be more sure of your exits and such.
Check for construction zone locations and for weather-related road conditions.
Allow more than enough time for delays so that you won’t be in a hurry. If you are rushing, then you won’t be as attentive or alert and might be more likely to become angry and/or frustrated.
Make sure your vehicle is ready for travel. Have your windshield wipers, breaks, tires, vehicle fluids, belts, and lights professionally tested often.
Have a car emergency kit.

The third Youth Sports Safety Summit was held in Washington on December 6. Hosted by the National Athletic Trainers Association, the summit hoped to provide additional medical insights, case histories, and a call to action to improve the care of young athletes.

Health care professionals specifically addressed youth sports injuries and medical emergencies at this year’s summit, “Preventing Sudden Death in Youth Sports”. Topics discussed included concussion and brain injury, exercise-induced asthma, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness, and exertional sickling prevention and treatment.

The January 2012 issue of the Journal of Athletic Training will have the position statement “Preventing Sudden Death in Sports,” which was also pre-released at the summit.

Presenting the position statement are Kevin Guskiewicz, PhD, ATC, a Kenan Distinguished Professor and founding director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Douglas J. Casa, PhD, ATC, FACSM, FNATA, director of athletic training education at the University of Connecticut Neag School of Education, professor in the Department of Kinesiology, and chief operating officer of the Korey Stringer Institute.

In Florida last week, a car stalled on a railroad crossing near Miami in Broward County. An approaching train was unable to stop and hit the car. Fatal Crossover Crash in Kansas City Cuts into Drive Time; 2 Dead, 3 Injured

Kansas City Bicyclist Injured in Hit-and-Run

A UMKC student was a victim in a hit-and-run earlier this in month of November. Near Rockhill Road and Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. in Kansas City, Micah Jacobsen, 29, was hit by a brown sedan as he was in the process of crossing the street on his bicycle. He injured his lower back after rolling over the hood of the car and falling to the ground.

The woman driving the car stopped to see if he was okay, told him that the light was green and then sped off without waiting for police to be called to make a report or exchanging insurance. Jacobsen was taken to the hospital and given pain medication before being released later that night. He wasn't unable to do much of anything for several days and even had to cancel a gig that his band had the next day.

Driving in Kansas City is dangerous, but riding a bike is far more dangerous. To avoid something similar happening to you, take the proper precautions.

Safety tips:

1. Wear a well fitting helmet.
2. More gear that you might consider are gloves, mouth guards, and full body armor.
3. Wear reflective gear, such as a vest or safety triangle, night and day. It makes you much more visible, even during the day. When you hear a motorist coming, straighten up and sit taller so that your reflective gear is more noticeable.
4. Put rear and front flashing lights and reflectors on your bike. They will make you more noticeable to drivers.
5. Use a bike flag. They make you more visible.
6. Put a mirror on your bike. If you see a car coming up behind you and feel like they don't see you, get off your bike and up onto the sidewalk.
7. Use a horn.
8. When possible, choose to ride on wide streets so that a car and bike can easily move side by side without touching
9. When possible, choose to rid on slow streets. The slower a car is going, the more time a driver has to spot you.
10. Use back streets on weekends. The risk of being hit by a car while riding on a Friday or Saturday night is much greater than other nights because there tend to be more drunk drivers out those nights.
11. Don't hug the curb. Give yourself a little room to get over if someone doesn't seem to see you and give you a wide enough birth.
12. Don't listen to music or talk on the phone while you're riding. You won't be able to hear cars coming and it can make you less attentive to what is going on around you.
13. Ride as if you are invisible. Assuming that cars can't see you and acting accordingly can prevent an accident. Stay as much out of the way as possible and know what the cars are doing. If you aren't sure, stop and get up onto the curb until you are sure it is safe again.
14. Always signal a turn, but try to turn at a place where there aren't cars behind you so that, if they don't see you, they can't hit you.
15. Another option in safety gear that has recently come to light is a compression collar, which protects your brain from a concussion. You can also use bent headphones to achieve the same effect.

New Sports Gear May Trump Helmet Safety in Kansas City

Over the years, lot of time and energy has been put into making sports helmets protect the skull and brain better. However that time and energy spent on the helmets we have today may have been a waste. Helmets protect the skull from being fractured very well, but that doesn't stop the brain from sloshing around in the liquid between the brain and the skull. The brain sloshing around in the blood, cerebral fluids and liquid is a major reason for concussions.

So, if helmets don't do it, how are we supposed to protect our brain? The answer is a very simple compressive collar or band worn around the neck. It only needs to be as tight as a snug shirt collar to do the trick.

Mammals have two sets of jugular veins in the neck; "external", which run along the side and right under the skin, and "internal", run below the outer layer of muscle. The "internal" jugular veins drain blood from the brain and skull. When these veins are compressed, the skull fills more fully with blood, keeping the brain from sloshing around if the skull experiences an impact. This protects the brain from a concussion.

Although more testing and validation will be needed before these collars can be introduced to athletes, the tests done thus far have shown that they will be a very important addition to athletic protective gear.

These collars are very simple to make and market. They cost only around ten dollars to make or the same effect could be achieved by placing cotton balls in the protective neck guards that hockey players already use. However, National Hockey League players are well known for fighting new protective gear, such as helmets and face shields, so this will probably be introduced to youth leagues in the future. Division 1 NCAA football teams have shown great interest in the compressive collar.

Dr. Joseph Fisher, anesthesiologist at the University of Toronto, is a researcher working on the collar. He wears a set of bent headphones every time he rides his bike to protect himself from a concussion incase he is in an accident.

Children with traumatic brain injury were found to lead to “substantial long-term reduction” in quality of life, according to the study.

· Children should always wear a helmet when riding a bike

Place gates on the top and bottom of stairways to prevent falls going up or down.

The study, published in the November issue of Pediatrics, looked at 729 children under 18 years old treated for brain injuries at emergency rooms in Seattle and Philadelphia between 2007 and 2008.

The children’s functions were determined before the injury, and then they were tested three months, one year and two years after. The children were assessed to see if they could have a conversation, and do things such as use the toilet, brush their teeth, and feed and dress themselves.

85% of the children suffered mild head injuries, and some of them had deficits at three months, but few suffered lasting loss of social and daily life activities. The children that suffered a moderate or severe brain injury, seemed to face obstacles in day-to-day life, sports and school activities at the end of the two year research study. Researchers said that the more seriously injured children had a lower quality of life than children undergoing active treatment for cancer.

The study included a control group of 197 children who had visited the same emergency rooms with arm injuries in the same period. According to the research, the children in the control group had no significant shortfalls after the two years.

Possible Distracted Driver Causes Crash in Missouri

A driver that is distracted causes crashes all the time. Recently, a multi-vehicle car crash occurred on the exit ramp of Interstate 270 to Highway 40 recently. The chain reaction accident happened when one car, a 2007 Ford F450, did not stop in time and crashed into the back of a stopped line of five cars. This driver was mostly likely distracted.
The multi-car crash closed the highway in which six vehicles were involved. A total of four people were sent to area hospitals, one with critical injuries.

Eleven years after Bill Masterton died of head trauma sustained while played hockey, the National Hockey League announced that players who sign after 1979 must all wear a helmet. However, in the early ‘90s, there were players still going out onto the ice without head protection. It wasn't until 1997 that all NHL players were wearing a helmet on the ice. That is quite a gap between a rule being established and the rule actually being enforced.

The debate is now over whether or not all players should have to wear a visor and whether or not that visor should be a full-face shield. More than 60% of the NHL players wear visors, but many of the older players are fighting this change. They grew up without wearing visors and feel that is hinders their vision, among other issues, and would hinder how well they play. For some, it is simply a freedom of choice issue.

Some feel that the player's safety should be more important than player's freedom of choice. Players have lost their vision in one eye because of accidents on the ice involving pucks and other player's hockey sticks. It seems to make more since that going blind in one eye would make it more difficult to play than wearing a full-face visor would.

New research suggests that full-face protection is the best way to go for hockey players. It offers much better protection against concussions and eye injuries. Concussions while wearing a full-face shield are usually less severe than half a shield or no shield at all. An argument can be made that football players wear full head and face protection and they move at much slower speeds and don't have to worry about pucks or sticks hitting them in the face.

Fatal Accidents cost $6 million in Kansas City or Missouri

Negligence behind the wheel resulting in a fatal accident costs six million dollars according to a new study from the auto club AAA. This total is determined by calculating the financial values on such things as property damage; loss of earnings, time at work and household activities; emergency services; legal costs; pain and lost quality of life; medical costs; travel delays and administrative costs.

AAA compared the cost of the national motor vehicle crash with that of typical traffic congestion. The congestion costs included the loss of the drivers’ time and the price of gas wasted idling in traffic.

The financial damage of fatal traffic crashes was analyzed by AAA in 99 urban areas. The study also found that the average cost of an injury-only crash is only $126,000. In 2005, the cost of a fatal car accident was only $3.24 million, and the cost of an injury accident was only $68,170.

The reason AAA completed the study was because they wanted to encourage Congress to invest in road safety improvements. They are recommending that Congress spend money on their long-term highway funding bill to reduce the financial impact of fatal accidents. These ideas include:

· modernized roundabouts and rumble strips

A 2-year-old Belleville boy recently died after being run over by a payloader tractor near Scandia in north-central Kansas. The boy was with his father, who was strapping down large hay bales that had been loaded onto a semitrailer. Scaffolds must be maintained in safe condition.
Scaffolds should not be altered or moved horizontally while they are in use.
The scaffolding must be inspected for visible defects before every work shift and after any event that may affect the integrity of the scaffolding.
Any scaffold damaged or weakened from any cause should be immediately repaired and not used until repairs have been completed.
Workers should not be using scaffolding during storms or windy weather.
Every employee that works on scaffolding must have safety training in procedures to minimize the hazards of the job.

Did you Know Your Child Should be in a Car Seat Until At Least Age 7?

It's the law. Missouri and Kansas are two of 29 states that have child restraint laws that cover children up to age 7.

This means that your 7 year old should be in a booster seat. It's recommended by many safety organizations that children should be in a booster seat until they are at least 80 pounds and/or 4'9" tall in order for the seat belt to fit properly.

The CDC reported that the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found that using booster seats rather than seat belts alone can reduce the risk of injury to children aged 4-7 by 59%. Unfortunately, a 2009 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that only 55% of 4-7 year olds were using a booster seat.

In order to gauge if your 7 or 8 year old child is ready for a seat belt, with no booster seat, have them sit in the backseat and put the seat belt on. The lap belt portion of the seat belt should fit low over the child's hips and top of the thighs; and the shoulder portion of the best should cross the center of the child's chest when they are seated without a booster seat.

Motor vehicle accidents can shift car seats and make them unsafe for children. The Institute of Medicine has released a new report, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, stating that there has been progress in treating TBI using Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT).

According to Committee Chair Ira Shoulson, (professor of neurology, pharmacology, and human science, and director of the program from regulatory science and medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C.) "This report lays out a research agenda to surmount the shortcomings and challenges that have thus far limited our understanding of the full effectiveness of various forms of cognitive rehabilitation therapy in helping patients with different severity and stages of TBI."

Those living with TBI have a long road ahead of them. Rehabilitation and reintegration into everyday life is a long-term challenge. They need an effective health care infrastructure, evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation policies to cope with and care for their impairments.

There are a variety of forms of CRT that are different according to the problems the patient is suffering from and the techniques used to treat them, so there is a problem with assessing the effectiveness of the treatments. Because researchers cannot empirically classify the results even thought it is clear that CRT is successful, they are frustrated. Oh, this is sad. Anytime you cover the death of a child, it's going to be difficult and when it is an infant it is even harder to accept. To see a child lose his or her life in an accident that very easily could have been prevented is always hard to deal with. This is a case in Georgia, but it is something we are seeing more and more of right here in Kansas City.

A three month-old boy was killed in the parking lot of a Kroger's Grocery store when his car seat fell from the cart as his mother was pushing it to the car. Authorities have confirmed that while the child was secured into the seat, the seat itself was not secured to the cart. The child was taken to a nearby hospital where he unfortunately was unable to overcome the injuries and passed away.

Overland Park Man Dies in Road Rage Related Accident

In the early morning of September 25th 2011, witnesses heard shots fired and Marquise Williams Jr.'s car crash into a post just past the 119th Street exit on U.S.-69. Williams is a 22 year-old from Overland Park. Witnesses claim they saw Williams' car and a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse enagaging in either a street race or road rage heading south on U.S.-69, when they heard shots fired. The whole event took place around 2:30 AM. The driver of the silver Misubishi Eclipse drove off before the police arrived on the scene to assess the situation.

September 18 - 24, 2011 is National Child Passenger Safety Week

Kansas and Missouri, like all of the U.S. have laws that require children be properly restrained in cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that it has been shown that car seats, including booster seats, provide protection for children in a motor vehicle collision and save lives. Specifically, between 1975 and 2009, over 9,000 children's lives were saved when child restraints were used.

September 18-24 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The mission of the campaign according, to the NHTSA, is to bring public awareness to the importance of using appropriate child restraints in a motor vehicle, whether that means using an infant seat, a 5 point harness forward facing seat, a booster seat or just a seat belt. It is important to use proper restraints every time you are in an automobile. The campaign ends on Saturday, September 24 with National Seat Check Saturday. At that time, you can take your car seat to a certified safety technician, such as the highway patrol, for a free inspection. Death of Three Year-Old Boy Ruled Accident after Drowning at St. Joseph, MO. Hotel Hot Tub

A 3-year-old boy was found dead at a St. Joseph, Missouri water park hot tub, the apparent victim of an accidental drowning. The fatal child drowning accident happened at Ramada Inn's Monkey Cove Water Park in St. Joseph, Missouri. The boy was under the supervision of his grandfather, who was also watching two other children, when the child went under water in the hot tub. Right now, the death is being ruled an accident and no charges have been filed.

Grandview Drunk Driver Crashes SUV into the Roof of a House

Wednesday August 24th, 2011, a 20-year-old drunk driver with two passengers drove his Chevy Blazer up the lawn at the intersection of Kensington and 43rd street and it launched off the ground into the roof of the house. The house had eight people inside, but all were in another room watching TV and were not injured. The driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The house was deemed irreparable by the police.

This is tragic, but sadly something that is happening every year around this time. A high school football athlete, working to prove his worth on the field, practicing in extreme heat conditions collapses and dies. It happens all over the country every year and it happened in Miami, Florida this week. A 16 year-old high school football player died shortly after participating in a conditioning drill at Miramar High School. He had already been held out of drills for the majority of the session because he had reported he wasn't feeling well.

The boy had called his family early on, saying he has been experiencing cramps and was ready to be picked up. As he was leaving, he allegedly collapsed. He began vomitting and went into cardiac arrest. The athelete was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

U.S. 69 from 199th Street in southern Johnson County to north of U.S. 54 near Fort Scott in Bourbon County.
Interstate 70 from just west of Topeka in Shawnee County to the Colorado state line.
Interstate 135 from I-70 near Salina to a spot north of the 85th Street interchange in Harvey County.
U.S. 81 from I-70 near Salina north to Kansas 106.

18 yr-old Motorcyclist Killed in Fatal Crash with Van in Johnson County

The child's parents claimed to be sleeping when they were awoken by the infant's screams. The mother found the baby covered in blood and missing several fingers.

The infant was rushed to the hospital because seven of his fingers required surgery to complete the amputation process because the ferret had chewed the fingers down to the knuckle.

The couple was arrested after conflicting reports. They claim the ferret has never bitten anyone. However, someone from an animal rescue organization told police the family's landlord had recently contacted the group claiming the family wanted to give up the ferret since it had bitten the baby twice.

Cellphone records for the parents and have confirmed the parents were actually exchanging text messages from several different areas. Pending an investigation into the overall safety of the home, the infant and another sibling have been removed from the parents' custody.
