Drowsy Driving Prevention Week: You Can Stop Missouri Drowsy Driving Accidents
November 6-12, 2011 has been designated National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week. The National Sleep Foundation is using this week as an opportunity to educate drivers about the risks of driving while sleepy. Myth: Older drivers are more likely to drive while drowsy. Fact: Drivers aged 16 to 24 are twice as likely to fall asleep at the wheel than drivers over 40. Myth: A driver is more likely to fall asleep on a dark, isolated road. Fact: More than half of drivers who fall asleep at the wheel doze off while driving on a high-speed divided highway. Myth: Drivers are more likely to fall asleep at the wheel during long trips. Fact: Fifty-nine percent of drivers who reported falling asleep at the wheel had been driving for less than an hour before nodding off. Myth: Drowsy driving crashes only occur at night or in the early morning. Fact: More than one-quarter of drowsy drivers reported falling asleep between noon and 5 p.m.
