New Research: Are SUVs Safer Than Cars? A Liberty, MO Auto Accident Lawyer Discusses The Safest Cars On The Road.
Last month, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released a report showing that SUVs are now among the safest vehicles in a Missouri car accident. In the past, SUVs have been associated with deadly rollover accidents. The risk of rollover far exceeded the protection offered by the size and weight of the vehicle. However, since 2005, the introduction of electronic stability control (ESC) has greatly reduced the risk of SUV rollovers. Since the introduction of ESC SUV driver fatality rates have decreased 66% from 82 per million vehicles for 1999-2002 models to 28 per million for 2005-2008 models. This makes SUV's with ESC the second safest vehicles on the road; only minivans have a lower driver death rate.
Electronic stability control will not be required on every passenger vehicle until the model year 2012. If you are considering purchasing an SUV, make sure that ESC is included.
What are the safest SUV's on the Missouri highways?
During the study period from 2006-2009 (model years 2005-2008), four models of 4WD SUVs reported zero driver fatalities. These were:
Ford Edge
Nissan Armada
Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Land Rover LR3.
The top ten 4WD SUV models with the lowest driver death rates include:
1. Ford Edge 2. Nissan Armada 3. Land Rover Range Rover Sport 4. Land Rover LR3 5. Honda CR-V 6. Jeep Grand Cherokee 7. Acura MDX 8. Lexus RX 400h 9. Lexus GX 470 10. Mercedes M-Class
The driver death rate also decreased for smaller vehicles such as cars. However, the death rates are high for drivers of small cars; these energy-efficient vehicles are increasing in popularity as gas prices rise. The death rate for drivers of small, four-door cars was 72 per million vehicles for 2005-2008 models. While this death rate is high compared to the rates for vans or SUV's, it has decreased 36% since 1999-2002 reflecting better safety standards for all vehicles.
If you have been injured in a Missouri car crash caused by another driver, the driver is to blame, not your vehicle. You may be able to obtain compensation for your medical expenses, property damage, lost wages and pain and suffering. A Liberty, MO auto accident lawyer can determine if you have a case.
