Headed For Summer Fun? Accident Injury Lawyers In Kansas City Offer Tips For Safe Summer Driving

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer driving season. As the summer progresses, the number of Missouri highway fatalities increases. Statistically, July is the most deadly month for traffic accidents in both the United States and Canada. What can you do to avoid becoming an accident statistic?

Our accident injury lawyers in Kansas City have compiled this list of tips to keep you safe while driving this summer.

Summer Driving Tips

1. Wear your seatbelt. In 2009, seat belts saved an estimated 12,713 lives. Seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury in a Missouri car crash by 45 to 60 percent, depending on the type of vehicle. In fact, more than 70 percent of vehicle occupants survive car crashes when they are properly buckled up.

2. Avoid distraction
, especially handheld cell phones and texting. Nearly 80 percent of all crashes and 65 percent of near crashes involve some form of driver inattention. Drivers who use hand-held cell phone while driving are four times as likely to be involved in a serious car crash involving injury or death. The odds are even greater for drivers who text while driving.
Other distractions that cause accidents include eating, drinking, children, pets, grooming, adjusting a radio, programming a GPS and looking at a map.

3. Don't drink and drive. There is nothing like a beer in the hot summer sun. Perhaps this is why DUI deaths increase in summer. If you choose to drink, make sure you have a ride home. Learn more in our article, "What Can You Do To Prevent Kansas City Drunk Driving Accidents?"

4. Turn on your lights at dusk. More daylight and vacation schedules mean that people are out and about when the sun is going down. When the sun is low in the sky, it can be hard to see other vehicles. Turning on your lights increases your visibility.

5. Don't drive drowsy. Shorter nights may mean staying up late and getting less sleep. Remember, sleep-deprived drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers, so make sure you get enough sleep.

6. Plan for the weather. A summer storm can soak the road in minutes. When it rains, remember to slowdown and increase your following distance.

7. Make sure your car is properly maintained. Check your tires and oil, make sure your lights are operating, and don't postpone any repairs. Getting stuck on the road in a hot car can be deadly.

8. Prevent your car from overheating. Cars are more likely to overheat in summer and a disabled car is at risk for a Missouri accident. For more information, read our article, "Preventing Missouri Highway Accidents: Learn How To Keep Your Car From Overheating This Summer".
