Airbags Prevent Kidney Injury in Kansas City Car Crashes

A Kansas City car crash can cause serious injury to the kidneys and other urinary tract organs. When the kidneys are injured, the Missouri accident victim may lose kidney function. This affects the body's natural ability to regulate blood-oxygen levels and remove toxins from the blood. Victims of kidney injury may require long term dialysis to prevent the blood from becoming contaminated with toxins.

Treatment of a kidney injury is expensive. Victims can end up owing tens or hundreds of thousands in hospital bills before making a recovery - if they make a recovery. However, these serious Missouri car crash injuries may be preventable.

Kidney trauma occurs when the body slams against the armrest, dashboard or door panel in a Kansas City car accident. However, new research shows that airbags may dramatically reduce the risk of injury to the kidneys and urinary system.

The study was published in the September 2010 issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. It is the first study to examine whether airbags prevent injury to internal organs during a car crash.

The researchers analyzed 2,864 records in the Crash Injury Research and Engineering (CIREN) database from 1996 to September 2008. They found 139 cases of kidney injury.

Types of crashes that produce kidney injury

  • Head-on crashes - 54.7%
  • Side-impact crashes - 45.3%

The researchers compared the car crash injuries of victims in cars with airbags with victims in cars with no airbags. They found a significant reduction in kidney injury when cars have airbags. In fact, front-impact airbags were associated with a 45.3 percent reduction in kidney injury and side-impact airbags were associated with a 52.8 percent reduction in kidney injury.

It may seem intuitive that airbags would protect Missouri accident victims from injury. However, airbags are primarily designed to protect the head and spine. The fact that they may also offer protection to the internal organs may influence the future design of airbags.
