In the news: Dangerous diabetes drug Avandia may cause heart attacks.

An article in the June 28th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that the Type 2 diabetes drug Avandia is associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke, heart failure and death when compared to other diabetes drugs and taken by patients over the age of 65. A second report published the same day in Archives of Internal Medicine echoed these findings.

Avandia or rosiglitazone is a popular drug used by millions of American to treat Type 2 diabetes. It is marketed as Avandia, Avandaryl, Avandamet and as the generic drug rosiglitazone.

Concerns about the side-effects of Avandia has been known since 2007 when a report in the New England Journal of Medicine linked the use of Avandia to an increased risk for heart disease. That report showed that Avandia users had a 43% increased risk of suffering a heart attack and a 64% risk of death from heart disease. The FDA was concerned enough that it put a “black” box warning on the label of Avandia, Avandamet and Avandaryl.

Known side effects of Avandia:

Congestive heart failure
Stroke
Heart attack
Blindness
Vision loss
Macular edema
Bone fractures

There are other prescription drugs available for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. If you are taking Avandia for the treatment of diabetes, talk to your doctor before stopping or changing medications. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the best choice for you.

If you believe that you or your loved one was injured by Avandia, you may have a Missouri dangerous prescription drug claim. The Kansas City personal injury attorneys at Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys represent people in Missouri and Kansas who are injured by the side effects of prescription drugs.
