Is Your Car Winter-Ready? These Tips Will Keep Your Car Running Smoothly
Are you enjoying the last crisp, clear days of fall? Don’t let the sunshine fool you; December is only a few days away. You’ve probably unpacked your winter coats and bought boots and mittens for the children; now it’s time to prepare your car for the winter season.
Wash and wax your car before the temperature drops below 55 degrees. This will make it easier to brush off ice and snow.
Put a snow brush and ice scraper in your car.
Get your oil changed. Oil thickens as the weather gets colder, and if it gets too thick, it won’t keep your engine properly lubricated. Check your owner’s manual to find out which oil is best for your car. You may need to switch to winter oil in order to protect your engine.
Test your antifreeze. You should have a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in your radiator.
Refill your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. Don’t use water because water will freeze at low temperatures.
Replace your windshield wiper blades.
Check that your heater, defroster, and lights are working properly.
Get your battery checked. Make sure the posts and connections are free of corrosion. If you’ve had your battery for more than three years, ask the repair shop to test the battery’s ability to hold a charge.
Put a set of jumper cables in your trunk.
Check your belts and hoses. These parts wear faster when exposed to salt and cold weather.
Get your four-wheel drive system checked. Many drivers don’t use 4WD during the summer months; make sure it is working properly before you need it.
Check your tire pressure. Tire pressure often drops when the weather cools and the air inside the tires contracts, and low tire pressure can cause you to slip on icy roads.
Consider snow tires. They provide a significant improvement in traction.
Prepare an emergency kit to store in your car.
