In 2009, there were 152,995 car accidents in Missouri. These car accidents caused 878 deaths and 53,829 injuries. Many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented had the victim been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
As of August 2010, drivers and all front seat passengers in Missouri are required to use a seat belt if the passenger car they are in was manufactured after January 1, 1968. And all children, age 16 or younger, must be buckled up in a seatbelt or appropriately sized booster or child safety seat. Child Restraint Standards For Missouri
All children under 4 years of age regardless of weight must be in an appropriate child safety seat.
All children weighing under 40 pounds regardless of age must be in an appropriate child safety seat.
Children who weigh over 40 pounds and are over four years of age, but are not yet eight years-old or over four feet and nine inches tall or weigh more than 80 pounds must be restrained in a booster seat or car seat.
Children who are over four feet and nine inches tall or weigh more than 80 pounds must be restrained in a car safety belt.
Seatbelt laws in Missouri are fairly relaxed compared to many other states. Police may not stop a vehicle simply because the driver or passenger is not wearing a seat belt. If a driver is ticketed for a lack of seatbelt, the fine is only $10. The fine is $50 if the passenger is under age 16.
However, this does not make buckling up any less important; depending on the type of crash, wearing a safety belt reduces the risk of death in a Missouri traffic accident by as much as 80 percent.
